On September 19-21, 1997, professionals and academics in computer science and computer-related fields will gather at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California, for the second Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference. Make plans now to join us as we celebrate the legacy of Admiral Hopper, a pioneer in the field of computing and an inspiration to scientists and women everywhere. The three-day conference features technical talks by many of the most successful women in the computing field as well as panels, technical topic sessions, workshops, and birds-of-a-feather sessions.

The Grace Hopper Celebration is an opportunity for computer scientists, professionals in the computing industry, and students to come together to exchange ideas, update knowledge, share success stories, and engage in a natural forum for networking and mentoring.

To streamline the registration process, attendees can register for the Grace Hopper Celebration through the conference Web site at http://www.sdsc.edu/Hopper. If you would like to receive a registration form and a copy of the conference agenda electronically, please send an email to cheryl@sdsc.edu with "GH reg form & agenda" (without quotation marks) as the subject of the message and the form and agenda will be sent to you. In the meantime, check the Grace Hopper Web site for updated information about conference speakers, workshops, technical topic sessions, and other features of this dynamic conference.

The total conference fee is $425, if registration is received by 6/1/97. For students, the total conference fee is $175, if registration is received by 6/1. The total conference fee includes three days of intense technical content, meals, a gala reception featuring an address from Anita Jones, outgoing director of Defense Research and Engineering for the U.S. Department of Defense, and a reception at the San Jose Museum of Art. The fee for conference registration increases to $475 after 6/1, and we expect limited space to be available for late registrations.

Scholarships Available for Students and Junior Professionals

In true testimony to her vision, Admiral Hopper considered her greatest contribution to society to be "all the young people I have trained." In that spirit, funding for approximately 80 scholarships/travel grants for students and junior professionals has been provided by the NSF, USENIX Association, and AAAI. The deadline for submitting a scholarship application is June 13, 1997, and applicants should note that the scholarship application process is separate from registration. If you plan to attend the conference regardless of whether you receive an award, we urge you to register early, as we expect a capacity crowd with few spaces available for late registrations. Conference registration will be reserved for all award applicants.

Details on the application process are available on the Grace Hopper Celebration Web site. You may also obtain information on scholarships electronically by sending an email to cheryl@sdsc with "GH scholar app" (without quotation marks) as the subject of the message. The deadline for scholarships is approaching rapidly so, in Grace's words, don't waste a nanosecond--apply today.
